Since 2008, the ballon d’Or had only been won by two individuals, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Both of them won 5 of the prestigious title each, co-existing as current record holders for most Ballon D’or won by an individual. Not this year.
2018, is indeed an odd year because this time that esteemed title has gone to one Luka Modric, 33, a Croatian football player who currently plays for Real Madrid.
Luka Modric has had a wonderful year as he led his national team to the 2018 World Cup finals againts France in Russia earlier this year.
It didn’t end well as France picked up the victory. But Modric did not leave empty handed as he won the coveted Golden Ball, an award for acknowledging him as the best player in the World Cup this year.
Although, he was on the winning side of the UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool FC. Modric also won UEFA’s Player of the Season and FIFA’s Best Player in September.
“As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies,” Modric said.
“The Ballon d’Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honour and a privilege to hold this trophy.“
All this titles picked up by Luka Modric led him to the top of the football world, even surpassing the crowd favorites Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi this year.
